With the new piezo keypads SCHURTER provides input systems that are impervious to all kinds of dirt and fluids. The keypads are particularly suitable for use in outdoor applications due to their ability to resist extreme ambient conditions such as negative temperatures, ice and snow. The keypads fulfill the IP 69K protection class and have a reliable operating temperature from 25°C to +85°C. The mounting accessory kit from SCHURTER enables the keypad to be sealed into the housing with the IP 68 protection class. The piezo keypads can be mounted into the housing from the front or the rear.
As a standard, the keypads are available as a number block with 12 or 16 keys and with an aluminium front. Point illumination may be integrated into the individual key fields as optical feedback or for user navigation. The operating panel can be designed in several colours in both the aluminium and stainless steel versions. In addition, SCHURTER can provide keypads that are adapted to customer requirements with respect to outer geometry as well as to the number and arrangement of the keys.
By using the piezo principle, the keypads are free of mechanical parts and therefore have an extremely long lifetime of more than 20 million actuations. The completely sealed operating panel is easy to clean and is resistant to common cleaning agents. The metal surface with an IK 05 impact strength renders the keypads highly resistant to impacts from outside. The piezo keypads provide a high level of functional reliability, leading to a reduction in maintenance costs.
The robust switch type MSM LA from SCHURTER has been redesigned and is now also available with point illumination. For displaying the switching status or for providing visibility during night-time use, the illumination colors red, green and blue are available. The switch is designed with either a one- or two-pole contact, and is intended for a switching capacity of 250 VAC max. and 12 A max. For direct voltage, the switch was tested up to 125 VDC.
The MSM LA is available in 19 mm and 22 mm mounting diameters and suitable for use in temperatures ranging from -40 °C to +85 °C. It provides physical and visual indication and may also be used in conjunction with audible devices required by ADA. With an actuating travel greater than 5 mm, the MSM LA is ideal for use in applications where increased feedback of the switching status (ON/OFF) is required.
Additionally, the switching status is easy to discern by looking at, or feeling, the resting position of the actuator. In the OFF state, the actuator position protrudes from the housing; in the ON state, it is depressed into the housing. This provides a user-friendly actuating function and also prevents inadvertent switching, e.g. caused by objects leaning on the switch.
The standard type as well as the versions with ring illumination and now also point illumination may be provided with lettering using standard or customer-specific characters. The laser lettering process is carried out in-house.
Due to the stable stainless steel housing as well as the high impact strength, the switch is particularly suitable for use in devices with rough ambient conditions or for vandal-proof applications.
The qualification test was carried out using a high-pressure vapor stream at 90 Bar and a temperature of 80°C. The hermetically sealed piezo switches can now be used in areas, which are regularly disinfected or cleaned using high-pressure cleaners. This renders them ideal for use in applications exposed to high levels of dirt and grime such as food processing, commercial cooking and transportation.
Besides the extraordinarily long lifetime of more than 20 million switching cycles, SCHURTER piezo switches also reveal a high level of robustness due to their stainless steel or aluminum housing. The following mounting diameters are available as standard: 16, 19, 22, 24, 27 and 30 mm. Other mounting diameters, materials, colors and shapes are possible, according to individual design requirements.
Point or ring illumination is offered in mounting sizes 22 mm and up. This feature can be used to illuminate the actuating surface in a continuous mode or to display the switch position ON or OFF. Laser lettering is available and done in house to minimize lead times. A broad range of standard legends and symbols are available. Customer-specific inscriptions are also available.
Piezo switches from SCHURTER have proved themselves optimal in meeting the demands for extremely long lifetime and for an operating surface that is seal-tight in order to prevent the access of dust and fluids. For the switches with an N.O. switching function, the operating temperature range has been extended to -40°C up to +85°C. This means that the piezo switches can now also be used in outside applications where extreme temperatures and temperature fluctuations may occur. The switches contain no moving parts, have a robust metal housing made of anodized aluminum or stainless steel and are hermetically sealed. The lifetime (lifetime > 20 million switching cycles) is almost unlimited, as barely any material wear or mechanical fatigue arises. The piezo switches are resistant to dirt, sand, dust and water; they can neither freeze nor stick through contact with fluids.
The following mounting diameters are available as standard: 16, 19, 22, 24, 27 and 30 mm. Other mounting diameters, materials, colors and shapes are possible for adapting the switches to specific design requirements. SCHURTER offers the piezo switch with point or ring illumination from a mounting diameter of 22 mm. For devices with night design, the illumination serves to make the actuating surface visible. The ring illumination may also be used for providing optical feedback or for displaying the switch position (ON/OFF). For lettering the actuating surface on our in-house laser-lettering unit, numerous standard lettering possibilities are available. Customer-specific lettering and symbols can also be produced.
Product Overview PSE
The new MSM DP switch is designed with two separate switching contacts. The separate contacts can be used as normally open, normally closed or as change-over. The MSM DP is ideal for potential free momentary switching action of electrical equipment. Furthermore, the switch can be used in applications where an additional second contact is required for a safety circuit. Typical applications are emergency switches where the control loop is switched, and in addition a second circuit for emergency services is activated.
Due to its flat front construction of 1.7 mm, a protection class of IP67 and a high shock resistance, the switch is extremely robust against vandalism. The MSM DP is available in mounting dimensions 19, 22 and 30 mm. The standard type is designed with switching capacities up to 3A / 250 VAC and 5A / 125 VAC respectively. For applications having other switching capacities, alternative variants are available on request. For night applications or where optical status indications are desired, point and ring illuminated versions in different colours are available.
With the new PTS series SCHURTER fulfills the technical standards and the requirements of the designers. Design and Ergonomics aspects play a major role in today’s public transportation world, the so-called functionality is not the sole decision criteria.
The switching status is visually indicated through an illumination ring. The illumination ring is lit by LED’s according to the customer request. A typical switch option is equipped with 8 green LED´s and 4 red LED´s, the red LED’s give the passenger an actuation signal that the switch was pressed. An additional option is the illumination with 8 yellow LED`s.
The PTS switches can be fixed with 3 screws. These screws are located behind the front bezel and therefore, they are not visible for the passengers. The standard front bezel comes with the RAL code 1023, yellow color. It can be lettered with braille codes and legends. A unique feature of the PTS series is the outstanding tactile feedback with a lifetime of 2 million cycles. A further advantage is the illumination with a viewing angle of 180 degree, which gives a wide-range identification of the switching status. The PTS switches of SCHURTER are available as standard versions with 24 V and 110 V supply voltage ratings and angled cables.
For regular environmental conditions, the MSM contact system is protected by a seal integrated in the mechanical pushbutton and by a sealing ring secured to the housing. If high humidity occurs or water leaks through the opening into the housing, it becomes necessary to use the version with increased seal protection of the contact system.
For such applications SCHURTER offers an IP67 protected contact system. The switch is available with electrical rating of 6A / 250 VAC. Alternative electrical ratings and additional types are available on request. The switch fits tight to the panel, with a height of only 1.7 mm. Mounting diameters for the MSM series are 16, 19, 22 and 30 mm. Point and ring illuminated versions are available for applications where optical status indications are desired, such as dark conditions or disability access systems.
The switches can be assembled from the front side of the equipment without additional fastening from the rear side. The new snap-in technology enables quick assembly. Due to this method of mounting, the metal switches can be used in applications with limited assembly space or where the access to the rear side of the housing is not possible. Typical fields of application are found in building technology or in machine construction with hollow profiles.
A further advantage is the cost savings as additional fastening material can be omitted and the assembly time can be reduced. Conventional metallic switches have to be fixed by a nut or a clamp from the rear side of the housing. For the snap-in switches mounting accessories or assembly tools are not required.
Therefore, the switches can be placed closer together due to additional spacing on the rear side. The snap-in technology is available for metal switches with a mounting diameter of 19, 22, 24, 27 and 30 mm.
The current product line is already available in 16, 19, and 22 mm mounting diameters. The new MSM 30 offers the same robust characteristics as its smaller counter-parts, only it has a larger, ergonomically designed, actuating area for superb tactile feel. Actuation force is 4.5 Newtons. Contact travel is only 1 millimeter with a fixed stop accompanied by a pleasant audible click. The MSM series provides maximum switching power over a voltage range of 5 V DC to 250 V AC and a current range of 0.1 – 10 amps. Switching action is single-pole, momentary with N.O. and N.C. contacts.
Built for tough environments, the MSM carries a water-resistant rating of IP 67, making it ideal for use in equipment exposed to the liquid spills, drips, leaks or wash-downs. A shock resistant rating of IK 07 makes it ideal for use in environments where the switch can be subject to heavy use or impact. The switch can also operate under varying temperature conditions as low as -25 and as high as 85 °C. A flat front construction of only 1.7 millimeters provides a nearly flush mounting to the panel surface, which makes it less conspicuous and therefore less likely to be knocked or battered from the side. These new MSM 30 are ideal for systems where a large actuating area is required for operation, such as information and vending systems. Wiring is via quick connect terminals. Assembly includes prewiring of the contact module, which is then snapped onto the actuator housing. Point and ring illuminated versions of the MSM are available for applications where optical status indications are desired, such as dark conditions or disability access systems.
With the click-switch version, contact 1 is closed with no feedback when actuated, whilst contact 2, which is placed underneath, provides a tactile feedback. The use of this dual contact function in a membrane keypad is primarily for applications requiring high-level security, where a second, separate switch, is required for triggering an indirect control command. This construction meets the medical products specification IEC 60601 for the intrinsic safety of devices.
In the double-click versions, both contact 1 and contact 2 provide tactile feedback. This feature is required in applications where operators need to be aware of the dual switching stages. The operator can control two functions e.g. slow/fast or request/confirmation via one tip point and is made aware of the 2 switching points placed one after the other during the actuation. The actuation force can be set differently between the first and the second tip point and can be set individually by the use of different metal domes or stamping matrix of the key tip. The double-click versions are primarily used in automation applications.
Piezo switches have an outstanding track record in vandal-proofing applications, such as vending machines and information systems. The key benefits of the piezo switches include high operating life as well as resistance to external influences and rough environmental conditions. To allow for a wider range of the design alternatives, SCHURTER now offers its piezo switch series with variable housing shapes. The designer can now choose from a choice of rectangular, square, triangular and oval shaped housings, in addition to the conventional round shape. The body is available in either aluminium or stainless steel. With these new shapes, SCHURTER is offering new alternatives for the design of robust and vandal proof user interface systems.
